Captain’s Log, Week 8 of Semester 1
This week we covered Land Claims in Antarctica in a UN Security Council debate. The session led to fruitful debates, with delegates representing the P5 taking a leading role. China in particular was instrumental in furthering the debate, with the delegate of Russia presenting their own support and solutions. The debate primarily focused on establishing better research centres that were not eurocentric within Antarctica. There was an ongoing struggle as some delegates were continuously corrected after their debates for the misinformation that they discussed, however it was ultimately an eventful discussion.
No resolution was passed, and no working paper was introduced. The 1hr 30 was cut short due to a necessary election and so little progress towards a resolution was made. Due to the engagement of delegates in this debate, this is a topic that we agreed to return to. It introduced delegates to the importance of unity in the UNSC while providing debate that could work towards a resolution.
After the debate was tabled, we undertook an EGM to elect a new conference officer. Rob Davis was elected in, and joins Otter – our new training officer – as the newest faces of committee. I’m delighted to work with them both this year, and glad to see them already contributing new ideas for the society.
This is your captain, signing off
